Cards travel to Michigan to challenge top programs
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a successful showing at the Illini Classic, the University of Louisville men's and women's indoor track and field teams will challenge some of the nation's finest at the Power Five Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan. Louisville will be joined in Ann Arbor by hosting Michigan, Baylor, Indiana, Minnesota, Stanford, Vanderbilt, as well as ACC rivals Duke, Miami, NC State and Virginia.
Competition at the newly-opened U-M Indoor Track Building will begin on Friday, Feb. 2 at 12 p.m. with the first field events of the men's heptathlon and the women's pentathlon. Friday's action will shift to the running events later in the day, with the 60m hurdles starting at 4:15 p.m. The Saturday portion of the meet will open with multiple field event finals, before running finals conclude in the afternoon.
At last weekend's Illini Classic, the Cards took first in both the men's and women's meets, while racking up 11 total event wins. In the men's meet, Teague Peck won the 400m with a time of 49.20, while Carlos Coleman led the 600m with a time of 1:20.41. In the field, Christian Buckley placed first in the shot put, while Javen Reeves set a school record in the high jump with a mark of 2.23/7'3 ¾".
On the women's side, Emmonnie Henderson picked up her third-consecutive shot put victory with a season-best throw of 17.05m/55'11 ¼", and Makenli Forrest finished first in the weight throw. On the track, Dorcas Wasike earned victories in the 800m and mile run, while Brooke Raglin tacked on a win in the 60m. Elsewhere, in a second-place finish in the 600m, Holly Hankenson set a school record with a time of 1:32.51.
Currently, six Cardinals on both teams enter this weekend's meet with performances ranking among the best in Division I. Henderson is the highest-ranked individual on the women's side, sitting at seventh in the shot put with last week's mark. Both Henderson and Makenli Forrest are ranked in the weight throw. Gabriela Leon and Morgan Zacharias are ranked in the top 75 pole vault marks, with Leon posting a 4.00m/13'1 ½" mark last week at Illinois. Finally, Alexis Gibbons is slotted 26th in the long jump with a mark of 6.08m/19'11 ½".
In the men's standings, Reeves and Jerin Allen are both among the top 12 of the high jump, while three Cards (Donald McClinton, Jr., Marcus Jegede and Oliver Newport) are ranked in the long jump. Additionally, Devin Valentine's mark of 15.15m/49' 8 ½" is listed in the top 75 triple jump performances.
