Cards Host Morehead State for Sunday Doubleheader
October 04, 2018 | Softball
Cards will play their first home games of the fall season Sunday at 1 p.m.
The University of Louisville softball team will continue the 2018-19 fall season on Sunday when the Cardinals welcome Morehead State to Ulmer Stadium for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
Â
As the semester enters the month of October, UofL has reached the midway point of its first fall season under head coach Holly Aprile.
Â
Through a pair of doubleheaders at Eastern Kentucky and Indiana the Cardinals have shown some power with three home runs to go along with five other extra-base hits and speed with eight stolen bases in 10 attempts. Senior and two-time all-National Fastpitch Coach Association (NFCA) selection Megan Hensley picked up where she left off last season as Louisville's top RBI producer, leading the team with six in the fall. Junior Caitlin Ferguson has belted out a team-best two homers and driven in four while coming off of a career-best campaign which culminated with NFCA All-Southeast honors.
Â
All six pitchers on the roster have seen action with sophomore Danielle Watson leading the way with 7.0 innings of work and redshirt freshman Taylor Roby following with 6.1 innings in the circle.
In addition to the games against outside competition, the Cardinals also took the field for a Red & Black intra-squad scrimmage on Sept. 22. While stats were not recorded, the Black Squad prevailed 6-3 in eight innings.
Â
"The Red & Black scrimmage was a really competitive game," said Aprile. "We competed well against each other and that's really what we were looking for there. Last week against Indiana, we split the series… The first game we came out really strong and then the second game they kind of attacked us a little bit and we were on our heels. I think a little bit learning and growing with everything we've done so far and we're just looking forward to getting better."
Â
Aprile expects the progress to continue this weekend when her squad competes on its home field for the first time.
Â
"We're going to continue to work on things, see some people in different positions, some people take charge of where they are – just looking for that development," said Aprile. "I'd like to see some good performances on the mound from our pitchers, I think they've been doing a good job this fall so far. At the plate we just need to continue to make our adjustments. I'm hoping to continue to see development in those areas. We're looking to have a great crowd come out to Ulmer Stadium this weekend.
Â
Up next:
Louisville will wrap up the fall season on Oct. 13 when the take on in-state rivals Kentucky at 12 p.m. and Western Kentucky at 4 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium. Admission is free.
