Men's Golf Opens Fall Season With a Sixth-Place Finish at Rod Meyers Inviational

Matthias Schmid debuts with a fourth-place finish.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Competing in his first collegiate tournament, University of Louisville men's golfer Matthias Schmid will always remember his memorable finish.
Schmid, a freshman from Maxhvette, Germany, was Louisville's low man, shooting an 8-under par 73-66-69=208 to finish in a tie for fourth-place at the Rod Myers Invitational in Durham, N.C., on Sunday afternoon.
As a team, the Cardinals shot a 1-under par 289-280-294=863 to finish in sixth place overall in the first event of the fall season.
Wake Forest set a tournament record with their 835 (-29) stroke total to win the tournament, while Duke managed to finish second overall. Vanderbilt, Oregon and Penn State rounded out the top five, respectively.
Schmid recorded 14 birdies over the 54 holes to pace the Cardinals in the opening event. He recorded eight birdies on Saturday to shoot a 66 -- tied for the tenth-best round in school history.
Simon Zach tied for 18th overall after shooting a 1-under par 71-69-75=215, while Erik Dulik and Keegan de Lange tied for 40th overally shooting 223.
Trevor Johnson tied for 50th after his three-day total of 75-73-76=224.
Next up, the Cardinals will compete at the Bearcat Invitational on Sept. 25-26 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
