Ohio State Edges No. 9 Field Hockey 2-1 in Overtime

Marigrace Ragsdale scores for the Cardinals
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Casey Cole's overtime goal lifted host Ohio State to a 2-1 win over the ninth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team Friday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field. The Cardinals (2-1) will return to action Sunday when they face Kent State in a neutral site game.
Â
"It was a disappointing result and a disappointing performance on the field, and really, that's no surprise given how we practiced all week," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "I give credit to Ohio State, they certainly played with more energy, effort and enthusiasm. They tackled in numbers, they were very physical and we were the complete opposite. What was disappointing was that they dictated the play… We are still an inexperienced team and we definitely need to go back to the drawing board and take a good, hard look not only at our individual pieces, but also collectively the team.
Â
The teams played through 21 scoreless minutes before the Cardinals broke through with a goal from senior Marigrace Ragsdale. Junior Katie Walsh set up the score when she intercepted the ball near the 25-yardline and dribbled into the circle where she sent a feed to Ragsdale who sent a shot past Ohio State's Liz Tamburro for her first goal of the season.
Â
Louisville took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting Ohio State 5-1 and holding a 2-1 edge in corners.
Â
The Cardinals increased their attack in the second half with two early shots, one of which was on goal. Louisville would go on to hold a 4-3 edge in shots while the Buckeyes had a 2-0 advantage in corners. Â
Â
After playing through 25 minutes, the Buckeyes (2-0) had gained momentum and were awarded their first corner of the half, Barr stopped Maartje Bongers' initial shot and appeared to thwart the Ohio State attack, but a video review determined that the ball went off of a Louisville defender's foot, resulting in another corner. The Buckeyes made good on their second attempt with Morgan Kile deflecting Bongers' shot to even the score at 1-1 with under nine minutes left in regulation.
Â
Neither team was able to get a shot off throughout the rest of the second half, forcing the game into a 15-minute 7v7 overtime period.
Â
Louisville held possession for the first four minutes of the overtime period, but Ohio State worked its way to its circle and earned its fourth corner of the game with under five minutes left on the clock. Cole connected on a shot by Caroline Rath to end the game.
Â
Barr (2-1) collected three saves in the loss. Tamburro (2-0) had six stops for the Buckeyes. In the contest, the Cardinals outshot the Buckeyes, but the Buckeyes held a 4-2 edge in corners.
