Emmonnie Henderson earns her first career regional award
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field season were announced Sunday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Louisville's Emmonnie Henderson was named the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year.
"Emmonnie has had an outstanding outdoor season this spring," said head coach Dale Cowper. "It's exciting to see her honored by the coaches' association and I am looking forward to see what she is capable of accomplishing this week in Eugene."
Henderson, a redshirt-senior, will compete at the NCAA Championship for the third straight year in the shot put and the discus. She owns the school record in the discus, and the indoor and outdoor shot put. She broke the shot put record twice this season, setting it at 17.98m/59-0.00 this outdoor season at the Louisville Invitational.
The All-American set an ACC Shot Put Championship record with a throw of 17.57m (57-7¾), winning the title. The native of Edwardsville, Illinois also finished third at the ACC Championships in the discus throw with a mark of 54.55m (178-11). Henderson finished second in the shot put and seventh in the discus throw at the NCAA Division I East Prelims.
"Wow, God has blessed me," said Henderson. "I feel honored to receive this accomplishment during my last outdoor season. Thank you to the coaches that voted for me."
Each of the nine regions honored both genders' top track athletes and field athletes, and the top men's and women's head coaches and assistant coaches.
Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches. Only those individuals from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.
