Henderson earns second team honors while Hankenson earns honorable mention honors
EUGENE, Ore. – The Louisville women wrapped up competition at the 2017 NCAA Championships on Saturday. Emmonnie Henderson earned second team All-American honors while Holly Hankenson earned honorable mention honors. The Cardinal women finished 32nd with eight points.
"Emmonnie was able to come back today and earn second team All-American honors in the women's discus," said head coach Dale Cowper. "She fell about four feet short of making the finals and getting three more attempts. It has been a tremendous outdoor season for her and hopefully she can continue to build in the shot put as the U.S. National Championships approach at the end of June."
Henderson finished 14th in the discus with a throw of 53.50m (175-6). She closes her career earning second team All-American honors. Henderson earned All-ACC honors for the third straight year this season.
Today was Henderson's second best showing in the discus at the NCAA Championships. She finished third in the discus during the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The senior wraps up her career in the discus for the Cardinals having earned first team, second team and honorable mention honors in the event.
In her first NCAA appearance, Hankenson earned honorable mention All-American honors in the heptathlon. She finished 18th in the standings with 5,133 points. She wrapped up the day by winning the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.46. She finished 13th in the long jump with a mark of 5.68m (18-7¾) and 18th in the javelin with a throw of 28.38m (93-1).
Hankenson was the first Cardinal to advance to the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon. The sophomore set a school record in the heptathlon with 5,556 points at the Texas Relays. She also earned All-ACC honors in the event this season.
"Holly Hankenson showed tremendous character and heart this week in the heptathlon," said Cowper. "She has battled through a knee injury that took place during the ACC Championships. For her to come out and grind through things this weekend is a testament to who she is as a young woman. She has more chapters to write over the next couple of years and we are excited to see her continue evolving as a team leader within our women's program."
