Tiffany Huber clinches 4-3 win over No. 40 Cavaliers
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team upset 40th-ranked Virginia on Sunday morning 4-3 in their last home game of the season. The Cardinals moved to 14-10 overall and 3-9 in conference play.
Â
"It is just the nature of this conference," Mark Beckham, UofL head coach, said after the upset. "I have been trying to tell them we are a good team. We have been in a bunch of matches, and it is just the way this conference is. There are a couple of teams that are a little bit better than everybody else in this conference and I just have to admit that. After that there are about 10 others that are all really the same, so it just depends on the day. When we are going through a streak like we were, it is hard to truly believe. We finally stepped up and broke through, but every match we play from here on out is going to be like this one - going into next weekend and the conference tournament, as well. Finally, we got through, so I am happy for them, and kind of relieved obviously. Also, more than anything, I am really happy for them, because I have been telling them that they are able to do this, but now they have broken through. Now there is some substance to it, so now we can move forward and continue to improve and keep getting better."
Â
In doubles action, Abbie Pahz and Mariana Humberg defeated Cassie Mercer and Rosie Johanson 6-3 on No. 1. At the two-spot, Jessie Paul and Elle Stokes defeated Camille Favero and Hunter Bleser 6-3 to clinch the doubles point for the Cardinals.
Â
In singles action, No. 48 Rosie Johanson defeated Alesandra Mally 6-0, 6-2 on No. 1 to tie the match.
Â
At the four-spot, Abbie Pahz defeated Teodora Radosavljevic 6-2, 6-4 to give Louisville the lead for good. On No. 3, Marianna Humberg defeated Meghan Kelley 6-4, 6-2, extending Louisville's lead to 3-1.
Â
No. 116 Cassie Mercer defeated Elle Stokes 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 at the two-spot to cut Louisville's lead to 3-2.
Â
Tiffany Huber clinched the upset on No. 5 with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win over Camille Favero.
Â
A 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win for Hunter Bleser over Olivia Boesing at No. 6 finalized the score at 4-3 in favor of the Cards.
Â
Louisville wraps up the regular season on the road next weekend as they travel to Duke on Friday and North Carolina State on Sunday before heading to ACC's in Rome, Georgia.
