Cards snap six-game win streak behind Wisconsin's Menz's no-hitter

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team fell 10-1 in five innings to No. 21/22 Wisconsin behind Kaitlyn Menz's no-hitter Wednesday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The loss snapped a six-game win streak for the Cardinals (18-8).Â

After playing the last 12 games at home, UofL will hit the road for an ACC series at Syracuse this weekend.Â

The Badgers (21-2) started the scoring in the second inning when Stephanie Lombardo was hit by a pitch and pinch-runner McKenna Heim eventually scored on a grounder by Kelly Welsh.

The Cardinals answered in the home half of the inning. Senior Tiarra Sanabria earned a walk and an error allowed her to reach second on sophomore Lillie Goetz's fielder's choice. Sophomore Megan Hensley walked to load the bases for junior Jamie Soles's RBI groundout which tied the game at 1-1.

The Badgers used four hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly to score four runs in the fourth. Hits by Melanie Cross and Brianna Flugaur and a walk to Kelsey Jenkins loaded the bases for Chloe Miller's two-run single. Sara Novak's sacrifice fly and Sara Novak's RBI hit brought the score to 5-1.

Wisconsin added a five-spot in the fifth with a RBI singles by Jenkins and Novak, a two-run hit by Miller, a sacrifice fly by Wyderski to give the Badgers a 10-1 lead.

Wisconsin's Kaitlyn Menz (12-2) took the win, allowing one unearned run with one strikeout while walking six in five innings. Miller went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs to lead the Badgers offensively. Wyderski went 2-for-3 with two RBIs

Maryssa Becker (13-5) took the loss, giving up seven runs, six earned, on eight hits and striking out four in 4.1 innings - she was also walked in both of her plate appearances. Hensley surrendered three runs, one earned, on three hits in 2/3 of an inning.
The loss marks the first time Louisville has been held without a hit since March 25, 2006 when Michigan defeated the Cardinals 3-0 in seven innings behind Lorilyn Wilson's seven-inning no-hitter.Â
