Women's Cross Country and Indoor Track and Field lead the Cardinals with historic seasons
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- After the completion of the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship, the USTFCCA announced the updated program of the year standings on Monday, March 13. The University of Louisville women stand at 13th with 50 points, which is a combination of the team's 2016 NCAA Cross Country finish and the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track and Field finish. Louisville is one of just two ACC teams in the women's standings, Notre Dame is ranked 12th.
The USTFCCA Program of the Year honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution's finish at the NCAA Championships.
In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team's finish at each NCAA Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.
"Our women's cross country and indoor track & field squads have put us in a great position," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Being ranked 13th out of well over 300 Division I programs is a terrific honor and a strong motivator to continue improving through the upcoming outdoor season. We have work left to do but our staff is excited about the progress being made."
The University of Louisville women's cross country team made school history, earning their first NCAA Championship appearance in the fall, finishing 31st. The Cardinals finished second at the NCAA Southeast Regional to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The finish at the southeast regional was the best finish in school history.
The University of Louisville women's indoor track and field team also made school history, finishing tied for 18th at the NCAA Championships on Saturday. Redshirt senior Dolly Nyemah repeated as NCAA Runner-Up in the weight throw to earn first team All-American honors. Emmonnie Henderson earned first team All-American honors after finishing sixth in the women's shot put while Holly Hankenson earned second team All-American honors in the pentathlon. All three helped the Cardinals score 11 points for the school record finish.
