LOUISVILLE, Ky - Sophomore Keegan de Lange and freshman Trevor Johnson each had final round scores of 1-under-par 71 to finish in the top three individually and lead the University of Louisville men's golf team to the championship at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
The Cardinals won the 15-team event at Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Club by two shots over South Alabama.
The victory was the first tournament win for the Cardinals since capturing the Cardinal Intercollegiate at the University of Louisville Golf Club on Sept. 30, 2014.
Entering the day two shots behind host South Alabama for the tournament lead, the Cardinals picked up five shots on the final day to win the tournament by a pair of strokes. The Cardinals won the tournament by shooting an 8-under par 284-283-289=856, while the Jaguars were 5-under par 278-287-294-859. Mississippi State and Chattanooga were tied for third, while Georgia State was fifth.
"It was a solid effort by the team," head coach Mark Crabtree said. "We received contributions from all five of our players. Freshman Trevor Johnson had his best event of his career in leading the team in the final round of action. It was a great way to start the spring semester."
De Lange, who shot a 3-under par, had rounds of 73-68-72 for a 213 total in finishing in a tie for third place, the best career finish and his fifth in the top 10 in just two seasons.
Playing in only his fourth career event, Johnson also tied for third after shooting 69-73-71=213 for his best finish as a Cardinal. Johnson, whose best ending was a tie for 23rd, finished under par for the first time in his career.
