First year coach led Cardinals to the ACC Crown
University of Louisville first year head coach Dani Busboom Kelly has been named the American Volleyball Coaches Association East Region Coach of the Year as announced by the AVCA.
Â
Busboom Kelly led the Louisville Cardinals to the 2017 ACC Championship after being picked eighth in the preseason coaches poll. Her ACC Co-Champion squad earned the conference's NCAA automatic qualification and won 11 ACC matches in a row to finish out the regular season and were the only conference team undefeated in ACC home matches at 10-0. It was the Cardinals' 28th 20+ win season as they closed out the 2017 campaign with a 24-7 mark and went 18-2 in the ACC. UofL had the fifth-best RPI improvement from 2016 to 2017 in the nation (+131).Â
Â
Her efforts did not go unnoticed as the Cards took home two major conference awards and led the ACC with six selections. Louisville junior setter Wilma Rivera was selected as the 2017 ACC Setter of the Year with teammate Molly Sauer picking up her second ACC Defensive Player of the Year award.Â
Â
Louisville outside hitter Melanie McHenry joined Wilma Rivera on the First Team All-ACC winners, with Molly Sauer, Tess Clark, Maggie DeJong and Jasmine Bennett earning Second Team All-ACC kudos. It was Clark's fourth appearance on the honors list and DeJong's second time being named.
Â
UofL also put Melanie McHenry and Wilma Rivera on the AVCA All-East Region First Team.
