Louisville will play its second exhibition game as the Cardinals face the Bellarmine Knights on Tuesday. The Cards beat Kentucky Wesleyan 101-64 in their first exhibition on Oct. 30 as Anas Mahmoud totaled 20 points, seven blocks, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Â
The Cardinals return five of their top eight scorers from a year ago when UofL posted a 25-9 record, tied for second in the ACC and earned a No. 10 ranking in the final Associated Press poll. Marking the 15th-consecutive season UofL has won 20 or more games. A trio of captains will serve as the Cardinals' leaders on the court in guard Quentin Snider, wing Deng Adel, and center Anas Mahmoud.Â
Â
The Knights posted a 32-4 record last season, winning the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division title (17-1 league record) and advanced to the NCAA National Semifinals. Bellarmine is fourth in the nation in the Street & Smith's preseason rankings. Knights senior Adam Eberhard is a preseason All-America selection as a member of the Division II Bulletin Super 16, noting the top two players in the eight regions across the nation.
Â
Louisville has won all 12 regular season meetings against Bellarmine. That figure is not inclusive of seven exhibition games the teams played in 2005, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016 — all UofL victories. Louisville won the first meeting 79-52 at Bellarmine on Dec. 6, 1960, a year in which John Turner lead the Cardinals to a 21-8 record and UofL's third NCAA Tournament appearance.
Â
Deng Adel and Donovan Mitchell each scored 13 points to lead five Cardinals with nine or more points as Louisville posted an 81-60 exhibition victory over Bellarmine in the last meeting between the teams (11-7-17). The Cardinals built a commanding 49-17 halftime lead by limiting Bellarmine -- a team that would go on to lead NCAA Division II in field goal percentage last season (.535) -- to just 18.8 percent accuracy from the field in the first half (3-of-16). George Knott led BU with 15 points.
Â
Cardinal Ties With Bellarmine — Bellarmine Head Coach Scott Davenport spent nine seasons on the UofL men's basketball staff, the last four as administrative assistant to UofL Coach Rick Pitino. A 1978 UofL graduate, Davenport coached former UofL guard DeJuan Wheat — the Cardinals' No. 2 career scorer — at the prep level as head coach at Ballard High School. Bellarmine assistant coach Doug Davenport was Louisville's Director of Video Operations for three years (2012-15). Felton Spencer, another Bellarmine assistant coach, played four years for the Cardinals (1986- 90) and holds the UofL records in field goal percentage for both season (.681) and career (.628). Spencer scored 1,168 points and grabbed 694 rebounds in his UofL career, averaging 14.9 points, and 8.5 rebounds as a senior. He played 12 years in the NBA with five different teams. BU guard Daniel Ramser was a high school teammate of Louisville forward Ray Spalding at Trinity High School in Louisville. UofL assistant sports information director Lori Korte is a Bellarmine graduate. Bellarmine radio play-by-play announcer Doug Ormay was a member of the UofL radio broadcast crew for football and men's basketball for 15 years before joining the Knights in 2016-17.
