Becomes first women's All-American in Louisville cross country history
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the first time in school history, a University of Louisville women's cross runner has earned the honor of USTFCCCA All-American.
Sophomore Dorcas Wasike earned the designation with a 29th-place finish and time of 20:05.29 Saturday morning at the 2017 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park. For Wasike, it was her fourth top-30 finish in as many races this season at Sawyer Park and closed out a terrific campaign in which she earned All-ACC and USTFCCCA All-Southeast Region awards.
"Dorcas was able to make history today by earning the program's first-ever individual All-American honors in cross country," said Louisville head coach Dale Cowper. "She executed the race plan exactly as Coach Walker and Coach Wrieden drew it up and the result was impressive. I couldn't be more excited to have her leading our program in the future."
In the women's 6K championship, New Mexico sophomore Ednah Kurgat took first with a time of 19:19.42, finishing eight seconds ahead of Washington senior Amy-Eloise Neale's 19:26.93. Led by Kurgat and three additional top-11 finishers, the Lobos claimed the national championship with 90, edging out San Francisco with 105.
Syracuse senior Justyn Knight held off the Northern Arizona pair of Matthew Baxter and Tyler Day to grab the men's 10K individual championship. Baxter, Day and teammate Peter Lomong's top-10 finishes powered the Lumberjacks to a second-consecutive team title with 74 points, finishing ahead of second-place Portland with 127.
