Junior Taylor Stone earns national honors

The University of Louisville's Taylor Stone was named the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18.

Stone, a junior from Herndon, Va., helped Louisville on both ends of the field in a 3-2 win over then-No. 5 North Carolina on Saturday. The midfielder/defender broke a 2-2 tie midway through the second half with what proved to be the game-winning goal, and also helped the Cardinals hold the Tar Heels to just six shots on goal and five penalty corners in the contest.

With their seventh-straight win, the Cardinals improved to 11-4 on the season and 4-1 in ACC play, remaining tied for first place with Virginia. The Cards and the Cavaliers will meet Saturday at 12 p.m. at Trager Stadium to determine the regular season conference title.

Stone becomes the second Cardinal to earn the national weekly honor, joining sophomore goalkeeper Hollyn Barr who was selected on Aug. 30.
