NORCROSS, Ga. – The University of Louisville women's golf program is beginning its 18th season in school history this week, when it opens play at the Fall Kickoff on Tuesday in Norcross, Ga.
The single-day, 36-hole tournament will play on the par-72, 6,183-yard course at the Berkeley Hills Country Club. Along with the Cardinals, golfers from Georgia, Vanderbilt, Augusta, Auburn, College of Charleston, and Georgia State will participate in the event that commences with an 8:45 a.m. ET shotgun start.
The Cardinals, who are starting their campaign for the second-consecutive year in the Atlanta area, finished second at last year's event. All five members of the Louisville Black team placed in the top 15, paced by Katie Mitchell's first-place showing.
This year's roster is filled with youth, following the graduations of seniors Mitchell and Laura Restrepo. The duo combined for 25 top-10 showings in their careers as Cardinals, including six individual titles. Mitchell owned a 74.07-stroke average, while Restrepo capped her tenure with a 74.16 average.
Of the team's six returnees, Olivia Cason had the best-stroke average at 73.97. The Owensboro, Ky., native made a charge at the end of the 2015-16 campaign, tying for sixth at the NCAA Bryan Regional and then becoming the first freshman in school history to advance to the NCAA Championship, where she tied for 45th.
Louisville, again, will split into two teams at the Fall Kickoff. The Cardinals' scoring team – Louisville Black – consists of Jacqueline Twitty, Molly Skapik, Lauren Hartlage, Louise Oxner, and Shannon Gramley, while the Louisville Red team is made up of Cason, Delaney Shah, Meghan Nay, and Ellen Kehoe.
Gramley and Oxner, the lone seniors on the team, carried averages of 76.25 and 76.55, respectively, last year. Hartlage, who is making her collegiate debut and is part of the scoring team, was a top-100 player nationally in high school and earned Kentucky Golf Coaches Association Region Player of the Year accolades three times during her prep career.
The tournament should serve as a competitive opener for the 51-player field. Designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby, the Berkeley Hills Country Club golf course is playable yet challenging, stretching nearly 6,700 yards from the back tees. With 50 years of history, the course features mature, tree-lined fairways and a rolling terrain.
Results will be available on Golfstat.com.
