Hedley and Wynn advance to round of 16 in singles
The University of Louisville men's tennis team opened the 49th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships with five singles wins on Friday.
Â
"In a tournament that boasts all 16 seeded players in the nation's top 76 nationally, going 5-2 is respectable," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarna. "Our only two losses were to the SEC favorite-University of Florida. George Hedley and Parker Wynn has a perfect day. Newcomer Nicolas Rouanet took the Florida's No.1 player to three sets and Chris Morin-Kougoucheff had three match points who was at one time was the top recruit in America."
Â
In the Division I singles flight, sophomore Christopher Morin-Kouguocheff defeated Kennesaw State's Fermin Calvo 6-4, 6-4 in his first round match and fell 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 in the second round. Junior Nicolas Rouanet fell 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 to Florida's Elliott Orkin in his first match of the day.
Â
In Division II singles, sophomore George Hedley received a first round bye and went on to beat Gardner-Webb's Breno Plentz 6-3, 6-2. Hedley proceeded to beat Virginia Tech's George Cartledge 7-5, 6-3 to advance to Saturday's round of 16. Parker Wynn also picked up a pair of wins to reach the round of 16. The freshman topped Arkansas' Branch Terrell and  beat Georgia's Andy Martinez 6-1, 6-2.
Â
The tournament will continue on Saturday with the first round of doubles slated to start at 8 a.m.
