August 29, 2016 | Field Hockey
Cards improve to 2-0 on the season
The No. 12 University of Louisville field hockey team got second-half goals from freshman Minout Mink and senior Lotta Kahlert en route to a 2-0 win over Miami (Ohio) on Monday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 2-0 on the season, while the RedHawks drop to 1-2.
Â
"Miami is a very good team and they dictated the play in the first half," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We were undisciplined in executing our game plan and became internal. Our second half was much different and we started to control the tempo by putting them under pressure and keeping better possession of the ball. We probably did more running than we needed to, but the positive is that we finished the game well against a very good opponent."
Â
The teams played through 39 scoreless minutes before Mink broke through to put Louisville on the scoreboard. After drawing the first penalty corner of the second half, senior Erin McCrudden inserted the ball and junior Marigrace Ragsdale provided the stop as Mink rifled a shot past Miami goalkeeper Alysa Xavier for her third goal of the early season.
Â
Both teams continued to battle through the next 18 minutes until Kahlert added an insurance goal when she connected on a pass from junior Nicole Woods at the 57:18 mark in the game. Kahlert's first goal of the season made the score 2-0.
Â
The first half featured a strong defensive effort by both teams with Louisville holding a 5-2 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in penalty corners. After entering halftime in a scoreless tie, the Cardinals increased the offensive pressure, outshooting the RedHawks 9-2 and holding a 5-1 corner advantage in the second half.
Â
In the game, Louisville had 14 shots with six of those landing on-goal as Miami's Xavier (1-2) had four saves in the game. The Cardinals held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners overall.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran (2-0) had one stop while the Cardinals' defense limited the RedHawks to four shots in their first defensive shutout of the season.
Â
The Cardinals will return to action in their home-opening weekend when they play host to Brown in on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Richmond on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission is free to all home games.
