Adam Hadwin and Derek Fathauer Advance in FedEx Cup Playoffs
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Three former University of Louisville men's golfers excelled on the tour over the last week.
Adam Hadwin and Derek Fathauer both advanced in the FedEx Cup Playoffs after their finishes at The Barclays, while Adam Rainaud won the 85th Connecticut PGA Championship.
Playing at The Barclays, Hadwin tied for 64th overall after shooting 70-68-74-77=289 to move up to No. 91 in the recent rankings, while Fathauer performed very well in the same tournament by finishing in a tie for 31st. He fired an even par 69-73-73-69=284 to stay in the top 100 of the rankinfs at No. 99.
The difficulties seldom deterred Rainaud, the 2014 champioin. He said his putting was outstanding. His chipping was great, too. He made impressive up-and-downs to save par at 7 and 8, both par 4s. Rainaud, the reigning Connecticut Open champion, needed to remain at even-par 35 on the front nine because Marrello had birdied Nos. 1 and 6.
Rainaud tied him at 3 under overall with a birdie 4 at 10 and a Marrello bogey 4 at 11. They both birdied 12, but Marrello posted a bogey 4 after hitting into a deep greenside bunker at 13.
Rainaud went two shots ahead with a chip and short birdie putt for a 4 at 14.
He was fortunate when his drive at 17 stayed in the left rough, 2 yards shy of the hazard. He was not fortunate, though, with his wedge that bounced off a sprinkler head over the green. He had visions of the 17th in last year's championship, where he made a triple bogey 6 at Wethersfield CC to lose a two-shot lead and the title to Giancola.
