Senior Lotta Kahlert and junior Nicole Woods had two goals each in Thursday's exhbition win over Ohio
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior Lotta Kahlert scored two goals and dished out two assists and junior Nicole Woods added a pair of goals to help lift the University of Louisville field hockey team to an 8-0 win in a preseason exhibition match against Ohio University Thursday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Â
The teams played through 22 scoreless minutes before senior Shannon Sloss connected on a feed from Kahlert to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard. Four minutes later, Woods added to the lead with an unassisted goal. Louisville took the 2-0 lead into halftime after outshooting Ohio 11-1 and holding a 3-2 edge in penalty corners in the first half.
Â
In the second half, the Cards wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Kahlert sent a shot past Ohio goalkeeper Alex Pennington to make the score 3-0. Freshman Minout Mink and Kahlert quickly added two more goals within a four-minute span to increase Louisville's lead to 5-0 at the 42:49 mark.
Â
Ten minutes later, sophomore Marigrace Ragsdale registered a goal and Woods added another unassisted goal to cap the scoring at 7-0 with just under six minutes remaining in regulation. In the 70-minute regulation match, the Cardinals outshot the Bobcats 24-4 and held a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Â
The teams proceeded to play a 7v7 overtime period in which Louisville held a 4-2 edge in shots while outscoring Ohio 1-0. Senior Erin McCrudden accounted for the Cardinals' overtime goal. Â
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran collected five saves in the shutout.
Â
Following the 7v7 scrimmage, the teams went to a best-of-five shootout which the Cards won 4-2.
Â
"I wasn't so concerned with whether we had won or lost, it was more about finding combinations on the field," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "I think we're deeper this year, we have a lot of options and we're trying to find the right combinations so we're playing people all over the place. We're rotating them a lot so it's going to take a little while to come up with what works."
Â
The Cardinals will officially open the 2016 season on Aug. 26 when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., to face Indiana University.
