Head Coach Dale Cowper announces the highly competitive 2016 schedule
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville Cross Country schedule has been released for this upcoming season and according head coach Dale Cowper the schedule is geared to to prepare the Cardinals for the post season.
"We've put together an outstanding schedule for the fall," said Cowper. "The Flyer 5k will kick the season off with a quality race against Ohio State and Dayton. It will also help us determine where each of the students are at coming off their summer training."
The Cardinals will start the season up in Dayton, OH with the Flyer 5k on Sept. 3. Claire Noser led the women's team last season with a first place finish while Japhet Kipkoech led the men with a second place finish.
"The next three races will be against much larger fields that continue to grow competitively," Cowper said. "Both squads will participate in the Commodore Classic and Greater Louisville Classic. Mid October will be a critical point in the season as we send the men's Squad to the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on the 14th and the Women's Squad to the adidas Pre National Invitational on the 15th. As always, we'll need to race well throughout the month in order to set up a run into the post season."
Louisville goes on a two week break, and comes back for the Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tenn. on Sept. 17. Last season, the men won the Commodore Classic while the women finished ninth.
The Cardinals will remain home for the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 1. Edwin Kibichiy took second in the event last year, and hopes to lead the Cardinals to another top five finish in 2016.
After the Greater Louisville Classic, the Cardinal men will go up to Madison, Wisc. to take part in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 14. The women will travel to Terre Haute, Ind. for the Adidas Pre-National Invitational that same weekend.
The ACC Championship will take place on Oct. 28, in Cary, N.C. The Cardinals will try to improve on last year's performance where the men finished fifth while the women finished 13th.
"Once again the ACC has the opportunity to prove it is the among the strongest cross country conferences in the country this fall," Cowper said. "Racing well on Halloween weekend in North Carolina is going to be our regular season focus."
After the ACC Championship, athletes who qualify will move on to southeast regionals on Nov. 11. in Panorama Farms, Virginia. Kibichiy led the Cardinals to the NCAA Southeast Regional title last year with a third place finish.
The NCAA Championship will be back in Terre Haute, Ind. Last season the Cardinal men finished seventh at the NCAA Championship for the best finish in school history.
