Newport becomes the U23 England Long Jump Champion
Louisville sophomore Oliver Newport won the England Athletics U23 long jump this weekend at the England Athletics Under 23 and Under 20 Championships. The competition was held on June 18-19 in Bedford, England.Â
"Ollie has grown tremendously throughout the year and this is a great capstone to his season," said Louisville Head Coach Dale Cowper.  "Any student on our campus would be excited to be a first team All-ACC selection and the Under 23 National Champion in the same season."Â
Newport won the competition with a jump of 7.43 meters. His jump was .02 meters better than second place competitor Scott Hall.      Â
  Â
"I was happy to win," said Oliver Newport. "I could tell from the start of the competition that it was going to be a grinding competition rather than a day to set records. I'm glad to get some promising jumps in before next weekend's Olympic Trials. "Â
