Edwin Kibichiy and Ben Williams earn All-American honors at the NCAA Championships
Eugene, Ore. – The University of Louisville track and field's Edwin Kibichiy earned first team All-America honors while Ben Williams earned second team All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
"Edwin ran a set of great races this weekend and was able to improve his personal best by almost three seconds tonight," said head coach Dale Cowper. "He and Coach Walker have done a great job of working through the longest season in collegiate athletics and they'll be ready to start cross country camp in a couple of months."
Kibichiy capped a spectacular season with a third place finish in the 3000m steeplechase. He finished with a personal best time of 8:30.71, knocking three seconds off his previous personal best time set in the semifinals. The junior earned first team All-America honors for the first time in his career. He earned second team honors his freshman and sophomore seasons.
Kibichiy won the ACC title in the 3,000m steeplechase for the second straight year and his third conference title. He also finished second in the event at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. This tops an impressive season by Kibichiy who also earned USTFCCCA all-region honors in cross country, while guiding the Cardinals to the Southeast Regional title.
"It was a tough day for Ben in the triple jump," said Cowper. "He was ready for big things but his ankle injury inflamed and he just wasn't able to finish the jump at a high level. These two guys are part of a very strong foundation that returns for our men's squad in the spring of 2017."
Williams had to fight through an ankle injury during competition. He finished 16th with a jump of 15.48m (50-9½). The junior earned second team All-America honors.
Williams won the triple jump at the ACC Championships, earning first team All-ACC honors. This was his second appearance in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He earned first team All-America honors in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a seventh place finish.
The men finished the championship tied for 36th with six points.
Emmonnie Henderson will wrap up the championships for the Cardinals on Saturday. She will compete in the discus throw at 6:05 p.m. ET.
