Cason's Top-10 Showing Pacing Women’s Golf at NCAA Regional
May 06, 2016 | Women's Golf
Olivia Cason carded a 3-under-par 69 and is in eighth place through two rounds.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Freshman Olivia Cason is continuing to pace the University of Louisville women's golf team, shooting a 3-under-par 69 on Friday, and the Cardinals collectively posted a 2-over-par 290 in the second round at the NCAA Regional Championship in Bryan, Texas.
While the field consists of powerhouse programs, six ranking in the top 25, the individual leaderboard is dominated by youth. Cason is currently in eighth with a 4-under-par 140 and is one of five freshmen to rank in the top eight. Playing in her first collegiate postseason event, Cason chipped in five birdies on her way to a tie for the fourth-best round at an NCAA regional championship by an individual in school history.
Louisville, though it slipped one spot to 11th in the team race, trails the sixth-place team Miami by eight strokes. The Cardinals, who put together their best single-round score since carding a 1-over-par 289 in the second round of the 2007 NCAA East Regional, need to finish in the top six to advance to the NCAA Championship from May 20-25 in Eugene, Ore.
Seniors Laura Restrepo and Katie Mitchell each had solid days on the course.
Restrepo climbed 16 spots on the individual leaderboard to a tie for 20th after posting a 2-under-par 70 on the second day of competition. She tallied birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 5 and scored birdies earlier in the day on 12 and 15. Mitchell, meanwhile, is tied for 42nd with a 4-over-par 148. She made a six-stroke improvement from Thursday, shooting a 1-under-par 71 in the second round.
Sophomore Molly Skapik was the No. 4 scorer for the Cardinals and is tied for 71st with a 10-over-par 154.
Louisville concludes the tournament on Saturday and is paired with Tulane and host Texas A&M to tee off starting at 9 a.m. ET.
