Men's Golf Tied for Third After First Round of Stillwater Regional
May 16, 2016 | Men's Golf
Freshman Keegan de Lange is tied for seventh overall after shooting an even par round.
STILLWATER, Okla. - With some of the top seeds struggling due to poor weather conditions and playing one of the most difficult courses in the country, the University of Louisville men's golf team took advantage of the opportunity to stand in a tie for third place after the first round of the Stillwater Regional at the Karsten Creek Golf Club on Monday.
The Cardinals are tied with Northwestern after both squads shot a 12-over par 300, while Oklahoma State is the leader after shooting a 3-under par 285. Oklahoma is second after carding a 4-over par 292. Augusta and Purdue are tied for fifth after Monday's round.Â
Play started early Monday morning under a steady rainfall, which caused scores to sky rocket.
However, no one told the young Cardinals, with two freshmen in the starting lineup, that they were supposed to falter under the conditions and the difficult course. Louisville fired 11 birdies on the day, and was led by freshman Keegan de Lange, who is tied for seventh after shooting an even-par.
De Lange is just four shots off the lead after only six players shot under par on the day, including Oklahoma State's Stratton Nolan, who is the leader at 4-under par.
Starting on the tenth hole in the morning, the Cardinals were steady on the back nine paced by the play of de Lange. A native of Pretoria, South Africa, de Lange birdied two of his first five holes and had saved a par with an up-and-down from the bunker on No. 11. After birding No. 1, de Lange would record three bogeys to achieve his even-par round.
"He was outstanding today," head coach Mark Crabtree said after Monday's round. "He was steady out there the entire day and just played to his ability. It was exciting to see a freshman go out and perform like he did today. The course was extremely challenging and he probably played his best round of the year."
Louisville played the first nine hole at 1-over par, and looked to be ready to pull away from the rest of the field. However, the Cardinals, who were playing one of the toughest golf courses in the country, the shot 11-over one the final nine holes.
"It was a tough course today,". "I was pleased with the play of Keegan, who led us as a freshman. Robin (Sciot-Siegrist) was steady all day as expected, but the conditions made the course even tougher than usual. We have to be better tomorrow, but we know things are only going to be more difficult as the regional progresses."
Sciot-Siegrist, a two-time ACC champion, is tied for 11th place after shooting a 1-over par 73. The senior was steady recording a pair of birdies, and is in contention heading into Tuesday's round.
Junior J.D. Lehman played the back nine holes at even par, recording birdies on No. 14 and No. 18. He shot 3-over par on the next nine holes to stand in a tie for 20th place after carding a round of 75.
Freshman Simon Zach is tied for 49th after shooting a 8-over par 80 and sophomore Erik Dulik is tied for 54th after shooting a 9-over par 81.
The Cardinals will be the second group to hit the course on Tuesday morning. The will tee off on the first hole at 10:15 a.m. and will be paired with Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.
