
Cards Conclude Day One at ACC Outdoor Championships

Two Cardinals receive conference honors
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Louisville track and field team completed the first day of competition at the 2016 ACC Outdoor Championships with two athletes receiving second team All-ACC honors.
In the finals of the hammer throw, Rachel Serafin threw a personal best mark of 59.74m/196-0 on her final throw to finish in fourth and garner second team All-ACC honors. Dolly Nyemah finished seventh with a personal best mark of 57.19m/187-07.
"Rachel Serafin and Dolly Nyemah did a great job in the women's hammer throw today," said UofL head coach Dale Cowper. "Both threw new personal bests and helped get our women's squad off to a strong start. Rachel has worked through many challenges during her time on campus and I'm confident today will stand out as a great memory."
In the final event of the night, Ernest Kibet placed fifth in the grueling 10,000m with a time of 30:07.66 to give the men's team its first points of the weekend. Kibet earned second team All-ACC for his performance.
Two freshman advanced to the finals in their respective events with Martice Moore advancing to the finals on Sunday with a time of 52.14 in the preliminaries of the 400m hurdles and Raven Grant clocking a time of 23.95 in the 200m. Mia Ross advanced to the 1500m finals with a personal best time of 4:30.13.
"Raven (Grant), Mia (Ross), and Martice (Moore) each put themselves in a good place for the finals of the 200, 1500, and the 400 hurdles, respectively," said Cowper.
Also competing on the first day of the ACC Outdoor Championships, the Cardinal multi-event athletes find themselves in a good spot as they conclude their respective events on Saturday.
"All four multi-eventers are sitting in strong positions after the first day," said Cowper. "I'm confident they'll come back strong tomorrow."
Through four events of the heptathlon, Holly Hankenson stands fifth with 3131 points while teammate Linda Mutter is ninth with 2944 points. The two athletes will finish the heptathlon on Saturday with the long jump, javelin, and 800m.
Through half of the decathlon, sophomore Eric Fox is in fourth place with 3634 points while freshman Cody Swabek is in 10th place with 3357 points. The two will conclude the decathlon on Saturday with the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and the 1500m events.
After the first day of competition and through three scored events, the women are ranked eighth and the men are ranked ninth.
Action continues on Saturday with field events beginning at 10 a.m. with the women's javelin. Track events begin at 5:45 p.m. with the women's 100m hurdles.
