Louisville Rowing Earns Two Wins at ACC/Big Ten Challenge
April 03, 2016 | Rowing
No. 15 Cardinals register second varsity four and third varsity four wins on Sunday
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 15 Louisville rowing team earned a pair of wins during Sunday's ACC/Big Ten Challenge hosted by the University of Indiana on Lake Lemon.
The Cardinals second varsity four crew of Chiara Ponko (coxswain), Gabi Biedenharn, Mary Waldman, Elizabeth Patrick and Maddy Staubitz finished with a time of 7:43.1 to finish more than eight seconds ahead of No. 12 Indiana and 22 seconds clear of Iowa. Louisville's third varsity eight crew of Tiffany Chea (coxswain), McKenzie Clifford, Kelsey Webb, Mallory Burnett, Kaitlin Ulbert registered a time of 8:10.4 and was more than nine seconds ahead of second-place Iowa.
"The boats that have been awesome and consistent day to day had some trouble putting it together on race day. On the flip side, some of the athletes that have struggled with consistency at practice stepped up and raced really well," said Louisville head coach Derek Copeland. "The bottom line is we have a great group that is prepared to meet its goals, but we are going to have to get both problems sorted out quickly if we want to close the deal."
Louisville also registered runner-up finishes in the varsity four and novice eight/third varsity eight races on Sunday.
Up next, the Cardinals will compete at the Clemson Invitational on April 16-17 in Clemson, South Carolina.
