Cards celebrate senior day with a 6-2 win over Syracuse
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior Brittany Sims went 2 for 3 with three RBIs to help lead the University of Louisville softball team to a 6-2 series-clinching win over Syracuse on Sunday afternoon. Louisville improves to 32-10 (13-5 ACC) while Syracuse drops to 25-21 (9-11).
Â
After three and a half scoreless innings, the Cardinals broke through with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Nicole Pufahl broke up Syracuse starter AnnaMarie Gatti's no-hitter with a double and Sims followed with an RBI single to put Louisville on the scoreboard. After walk to junior Jordan McNary, senior Hailey Smith smacked a two-run double to give Louisville a 3-0 lead.
Â
The Cards tacked on two more runs behind Sims' two-run double in the fifth. Junior Maryssa Becker led off with a single and was lifted for pinch-runner sophomore Jessica Adell who proceeded to steal second. Freshman Megan Hensley walked and two outs later, Sims connected on her ninth double of the season to make the score 5-0.
Â
Syracuse got two runs back in the top of the sixth. Maddi Doane drew a leadoff walk and Corinne Ozanne followed with a single. An error allowed Sydney O'Hara to reach and loaded the bases for Andrea Bombace whose fielder's choice saw Ozanne out at second, but brought Doane home. Alicia Hansen's RBI hit plated O'Hara to cut the Cards' lead to 5-2.
Â
Louisville answered with a pair of runs in the sixth. Smith walked and junior Morgan Meyer was safe on a bunt single. A wild pitch placed both runners in scoring position. Everyone was safe on sophomore Sidney Melton's fielder's choice which loaded the bases for Becker who drove pinch-runner junior Tiarra Sanabria home to make the score 6-2. Â
Â
Becker (19-6) picked up the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits and striking out one in a complete game effort. Smith finished the game with a double and two RBIs.
Â
Gatti (11-11) took the loss after giving up three earned runs on three hits and striking out two in 3.1 innings. Jocelyn Cater surrendered three earned runs on three hits in 2.2 innings of relief. Doane and Ozanne had two hits apiece to lead the Orange offensively.
