Senior becomes the fourth ACC men's golfer to win consecutive ACC titles
New London, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference is steep in men's golf tradition, with some of the top programs in country calling the league home.
Despite only competing in the league for two seasons, the University of Louisville etched its name in the record books at the 63rd annual ACC Men's Golf Championship this weekend.
For only the fourth time in league history, the ACC had a back-to-back champion when Louisville's Robin Sciot-Siegrist became the first consecutive winner since Charles Warren of Clemson won in 1997 and 1998. Wake Forest's Ronnie Thomas (1959-60) and Scott Hoch (1977-78) were the only two other back-to-back champions.
As a team, the Cardinals finished in sixth place after shooting a 2-over par 287-293-286=866. Clemson won the team title after shooting a 25-under 839 on the weekend to claim its 10th title in Clemson program history and first since 2004. Wake Forest finished in second place at 14-under 850, followed by Florida State (-5), Georgia Tech (E), Duke (+1), Louisville (+2), NC State (+5), North Carolina (+6), Virginia (+6), Notre Dame (+19), Virginia Tech (+26), and Boston College (+37)
Robin Sciot-Siegrist, who tied for individual medalist honors last year by shooting 11-under par, almost matched his total from last season. Sciot-Siegrist posted a 10-under 206 – the seventh-best total in school history and the third-best tournament score of his career.
The junior from Rueil-Malmaison, France, entered the final round tied for sixth at 3-under, four strokes behind the leader, but shot a 7-under 65 on Sunday, which was the fifth-best single round total in school history.
"I putted way better [today]," said Sciot-Siegrist. "I actually hit the ball better on Friday, and today I just rolled a lot of the putts in and had good momentum towards the end."
Sciot-Siegrist played in the same early pairing as NC State's Jacob McBride, who shot a 6-under 66 on Sunday and finished tied for second for the tournament.
"[McBride] started earlier than me with two birdies, and I had to catch up," said Sciot-Siegrist. "I made a birdie and eagle to come back a little bit, and then I had a great stretch. It was a great battle toward the end, it wasn't until the last hole, honestly. It was great."
Keegan de Lange tied for 23rd for the Cardinals – shooting a 1-over par 217. Simon Zach tied for 39th after carding 72-77-74=223 and Erik Dulik was tied for 42nd when shot 74=75-75=224. J.D. Lehman tied for 46th place when he fired a 79-74-74=227.
The Cardinals will await their post-season fate when the NCAA announces its regional selections on Monday, May 5 at 9:30 a.m. on the Golf Channel.
