April 12, 2016 | Field Hockey, General, Beyond the Buzzer
Cards accumulated 402 hours between January 1 and April 4
As part of the 2016 Spring Helper Helper Community Service Bracket Challenge, the University of Louisville Field Hockey team completed 402 hours. The team was recognized last week as the No. 1 program across all sports and divisions in community service hours per student-athlete. After winning the competition, the team is donating $500 to the Douglass Community Center.
Â
Participation in the 2016 spring semester competition used the Helper Helper platform and was open to all NCAA-affiliated schools. From January 1 through March 13, men's and women's teams logged community service hours to try and get into the field of 64. Through each week, teams that completed more service during the competition moved on while other teams got knocked out. The further the teams got, the more opportunities they had to accumulate more hours. The final four teams consisted of Louisville Field Hockey, Oklahoma Women's Basketball, NC Central Women's Volleyball, and UAB Women's Volleyball. The tournament ended between a matchup between UofL Field Hockey and Oklahoma Women's Basketball with the Cardinals finishing on top.
Â
The student-athletes were avid volunteers at the Douglass Community Center and participated in many of their adapted sports activities. Â They participated in many activities such as wheelchair basketball and goal ball.
Â
BJ Levis, Recreation Administrator for Metro Parks and Recreation was grateful for Louisville's support. "Words cannot express how thankful we are for the volunteers from the U of L Field Hockey team. These wonderful athletes have joined us for numerous programs and have been a highlight to many of our participants. Their passion and the love they show for our participants at our Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation Program is unbelievable. They have been a huge help with programs and have brought much energy and joy! We always look forward to the ladies coming out!! Thanks so much for making the lives of the people we serve a little brighter."
Â
Field hockey player and co-team community outreach representative, Elisa Garcia is very proud about her team's accomplishment. Â "Everyone on the team was very passionate about this competition. We are very grateful that we have the opportunity every day to give back to the community and help those who are in need. Being a student-athlete at UofL is an honor and every day we receive everything to be the best that we can be. We believe that everyone here should have that same opportunity. Thank you Helper Helper to motivate us to keep going!"
