14 former players worked out for NFL scouts and coaches
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With representatives from 29 teams from the National Football League in attendance, the University of Louisville football program conducted its Pro Day Wednesday when 14 players worked out in the Trager Indoor Practice Facility.
Former Cards went through testing in the weight room before doing position work in front of scouts and position coaches from NFL teams. Â
With a small senior class, the Cards had a small group available beginning on Wednesday morning. Teams went through injury reports and watched film before getting an opportunity to work out the former Cardinals.
Defensive end Sheldon Rankins, a projected first-round pick, bypassed most of the day's activities before ending the day with position drills.
"I think it went well," senior defensive end Sheldon Rankins said. "I just did position work. It was fun today. The last two months have been a whirlwind. The combine solidified to me that the NFL dream was almost here."
A participant in the NFL Combine at the end of February, Rankins was able to showcase his skills for all the NFL teams, but for the other players who didn't receive an invitation, Wednesday's Pro Day was their opportunity to shine.
"I had a good two months of training," linebacker James Burgess said. "I didn't get an invite to the combine so this was my chance to showcase my talents. I felt like I did a pretty good job out there today, but hopefully teams can go back and watch my game film."
Burgess, who was second on the team last year with 91 tackles, weighed in at 236 pounds, which was almost 10 pounds heavier than he played last season.
"I thought I had a pretty good time out there today," Burgess said. "I put on a few pounds, but I still ran a pretty good time. I thought it was a pretty good day. I expected to run about a 4.6, which I did so I was pleased with my performance."
Running back Corvin Lamb turned heads with his speed this afternoon. Taking off in the 40-yard dash, Lamb ran a low 4.3, which is the main asset he brings to an NFL team.
"I knew I'd put in a good time and I did," Lamb said. "My speed is definitely my strength. I'm healthy now and was able to showcase my speed today for a lot of the scouts."
With the draft still more than a month away, this was the last chance for a lot of these players to make a name for themselves, and for some, that's exactly what happened.
