LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team fell to 6-1 Virginia Tech in a conference matchup on Friday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"It is frustrating just because of the fact that I honestly feel like we are actually playing better tennis lately," said head coach Mark Beckham. "This is kind of what this conference does to you that you don't really know where your wins are going to come from but you always have to play high level tennis and you just have to go out and find those wines wherever they are. We have to make sure we go out and create our momentum and at some point we are definitely going to do that."
The Hokies opened up the match by winning all three doubles matches. The tandem of Caroline Dexhelet and Raluca Mita defeated Elle Stokes and Jessie Paul 6-2 at Court 2 before the Hokies clinched the doubles point on Court 1 with Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford beating Ariana Rodriguez and Sena Suswam 6-3. Court 3 finished immediately after with Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nadakumar beating Abbie Pahz and Olivia Boesing 6-2.
In singles action, the Hokies won the first three singles matches in straight sets beginning at Court 5 with Mita defeating Ola Mally 6-3, 6-0. Cerezo-Codina defeated Rodriguez 6-3, 6-3 on Court 2 and Daxhelet clinched the match at No. 3 singles by holding off Suswam 7-5 in the first set and winning the second set 6-2.
The Hokies got another point on Court 1 with No. 51 Fusinato holding off Jessie Paul 7-5, 6-4. Pahz gave the Cardinals a point on Court 4 for the lone point of the match. In the first set, Pahz battled with Williford by lost 7-5 before rebounding to win the second set 6-3. In the first set, Pahz held off Williford 11-9 to win the tiebreaking point. Nadakumar defeated Boesing on Court 6 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to close out singles action.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday, March 26 as they host Clemson at 11 a.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
