Suswam and Pahz pick up victories in singles
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team fell 5-2 to Clemson in a conference matchup on Sunday morning at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"This is the toughest loss to take of the season, just because we had the No. 25 ranked team in the country," said head coach Mark Beckham. "Not taking anything away from Clemson but today they were ready to lose to us, but we just did not take advantage of it."
The Tigers opened up the match by clinching the doubles point. The Cardinals were up on Court 1 with the duo of Ariana Rodriguez and Sena Suswam leading early but Clemson's Ayan Broomfield and Fernanda Navarro took the 6-4 win. On Court 3, Clemson's Daniela Ruiz and Joana Eidukonyte defeated Olivia Boesing and Abbie Pahz 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.
Beginning singles action, the Tigers used straight sets to win the first three singles matches. On court 5, Elle Stokes fell 6-0, 6-2 to Tristen Dewar and No. 52 Broomfield defeated Jessie Paul 6-2, 6-2 to take a 3-0 lead. The match clincher was on Court 3 when Clemson's Navarro defeated Rodriguez 6-0, 6-3.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard when the freshman Sena Suswam knocked off former No. 1 player in the nation and All-American, No. 20 Joana Eidukontye 6-2, 6-3.
"I've always understood how talented she is and I know how capable she is of doing things like this," said Beckham on Suswam. "Is it for me to expect for her to beat a former No. 1 player and All-American, should I expect that? Not neccesarily, but I do know she is capable. I feel like she is eventually going to be that play who will get those types of wins because she is very talented and very gifted."
Abbie Pahz remained hot as she won her ninth consecutive singles match in conference play when she defeated Ally Miller-Krasilnikov 6-3, 6-3 on Court 4.
"Abbie is the one person I have on this steam that is actually mentally tough," said Beckham on Pahz. "She is really strong right now and that is what winning will do as it will give you that type of confidence in tough situations."
The match ended on Court 6 when Ruiz defeated Boesing to give the Tigers a 5-2 win. Boesing fell in the first set 6-4 but rebounded to take the second set 7-6 (10-8) but Ruiz recovered to win the third set with a 10-6 tiebreaker.
The Cardinals will be back in action next weekend as they travel to North Carolina April 2 for a 11 a.m. first serve before hosting Cincinnati on April 3 at 2 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
