Cards get a singles win from Abbie Pahz and forced three-sets at Nos. 4 and 6, but fell short against No. 8 Duke
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's tennis team fell 6-1 to eighth-ranked Duke in an ACC matchup at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Cardinals (7-10, 0-5 ACC) got a singles win from sophomore Abbie Pahz and forced three-sets at Nos. 4 and 6, but fell short against No. 8 Duke (12-2, 5-1).
"Today, honestly, was the best we've played all season," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "It's a shame that it took until the middle of March, but (today's performance) is what I expect out of this team. They finally clicked today. I think they've been putting a massive amount of pressure on themselves and I feel like today they finally just let it go and just played tennis."
The Blue Devils used doubles wins on courts one and two to take the first point of the match. Samantha Harris and Kaitlyn McCarthy teamed to beat Louisville junior Elle Stokes and Jessie Paul 6-2 at the No. 2 spot while the 18th-ranked Blue Devil duo of Beatrice Capra and Ellyse Hamlin topped sophomore Ariana Rodriguez and freshman Sena Suswam 6-1 at No. 1. Louisville junior Olivia Boesing and sophomore Abbie Pahz were leading Chalena Scholl and Alyssa Smith 4-3 when the point was secured.
In singles action, Duke increase its lead to 2-0 when Harris picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Stokes at the three-spot. The Cardinals responded on court five where Pahz defeated Smith 6-4, 6-2 to make the score 2-1. The Blue Devils picked up another win at the No. 1 position as No. 67 Scholl edged Paul 7-5, 6-4 to push Duke ahead 3-1. The match was decided on court 2 where No. 32 McCarthy defeated Rodriguez 6-0, 6-4 to secure the win for the Blue Devils.
At No. 6, Boesing outlasted Christina Makarova 7-6 (7-1) in the first set. Makarova responded with a 6-3 decision in the second. The players battled in a third set tiebreaker in which Makarova prevailed 10-7 to make the match score 5-1. On court four Duke's Hamlin beat Suswam 6-3 in the first set, but the Louisville freshman stormed back to take the second by a score of 6-2 to force a third set which Hamlin won 6-4 to give the Blue Devils the 6-1 victory.
"Our team needs to understand that we were playing a team who was in the top 10 in the nation, but that really doesn't matter. You have to go out and play to your capabilities. If you're doing that, you're always going to give yourself a chance to win," said Beckham. "I feel like today was the first time we've done that this season. So while I'm disappointed in the loss, I've also got to take the positive out of it. I always tell them to give me their best effort and I'll take whatever the results are. Today was the first time this season where they gave their absolute best effort and we lost to a really good team, but everything was very competitive. Hopefully we can build on this and continue to get better."
The Cardinals return to action on Friday when they face Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
