
Cardinals Finish with Four Wins on First Day at the USF Bulls Invitational

Wash, Reeves, Gilmore and Chemoiywo lead the Cardinals with event wins
TAMPA, FLA. – The University of Louisville track and field team opened the 2016 outdoor season with four wins on the first day of competition in the USF Bulls Invitational. Caitlin Gilmore, Bre'Yana Wash, Javen Reeves and Calvin Chemoiywo all won events for the Cardinals on Thursday.
"Bre'Yana Wash and Javen Reeves had truly outstanding performances today in the women's long jump and men's high jump," said head coach Dale Cowper. "It's impressive to watch them open the outdoor season just shy of existing school records."
Gilmore started the day off with a win in the hammer throw. She finished with a meet record of 55.97m/183-07 for her first win of the outdoor season. Freshman Cyerra Cassell finished second with a mark of 54.90m/180-01.
Wash continued her momentum from the indoor season into the outdoor season with a win in the long jump, setting a new meet record. She won the event with a new personal best mark of 6.30m/20-08.00, just shy of Charachesicia Lockhart's school record of 6.34m/20-9.75.
Reeves won the long jump to kick off the outdoor season with a win. He finished with a new personal best mark of 2.20m/7-02.50, just shy of Tone Belt's school record of 2.23m/7-3.75.
Chemoiywo won his first event of the year in the 5000m run. He finished with a season best time of 14:44.48. Senior Japhet Kipkoech finished second with a time of 14:44.53.
Other highlights of the day were in the women's javelin throw. Newcomer Emily Bryan finished second with a personal best throw of 40.91m/134-03. Freshman Halee Hudson finished third with a personal best throw of 40.67m/133-05.
In the men's hammer throw, Darrius Lopez finished third with a new personal best mark of 57.93m/190-01. Codie Hamsley finished third in the men's discus invite with a mark of 53.36m/175-01.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday for the final day of competition in the USF Bulls Invitational. Field events are slated to begin at 9:00 a.m.
