Elisa Garcia has been named the 2016 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award Winner for field hockey
University of Louisville field hockey player Elisa Garcia has been named for the 2016 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award Winner for field hockey as announced by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.

The three finalists will be announced on March 17 with the top Male and Female Athletes of the Year announced on April 7.

Garcia, a senior midfielder from Santiago, Chile was a team co-captain and a three-year starter for the Cardinals. She earned 2015 All-ACC second team honors after leading the Cardinals with eight assists and tied for second on the team with 16 points. The three-time Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Region selection finished her career ranked third on Louisville's all-time list for career assists. The marketing major is also a two-time All-ACC Academic team member.

The award was established to honor undergraduate students of color who exemplify the standards set by tennis great Arthur Ashe Jr. In order to be nominated, student-athletes must maintain a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and be active on campus or in the community. The NCAA Office of Inclusion has partnered with Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine to support the award. Approximately 1,000 male and female students from across the country were nominated.
