One event win and one school record highlight the first day at the ACC Indoor Championships
ROXBURY CROSSING, Mass. – The University of Louisville track and field team got off to a hot start on the first day of competition by claiming the program's first ACC Indoor event title at the 2016 ACC Indoor Championships inside the Reggie Lewis Center on Thursday. Junior Dolly Nyemah won the weight throw by setting an ACC meet record while freshman Holly Hankenson set a school record in the pentathlon.
"The ladies really got things off to a great start for us today," said head coach Dale Cowper. "We had personal records from Holly Hankenson, Emmonnie Henderson, Rachel Serafin, and Dolly Nyemah. I couldn't be happier with the way our squad competed today."
Standing at third place with one throw remaining in the final round, Nyemah hurled a personal best and ACC Championship meet record mark of 21.64m/71-0 to capture the gold. Teammates Emmonnie Henderson and Rachel Serafin finished eighth and ninth, respectively, with both setting personal records with their throws.
"Dolly was extremely nervous in the early rounds of the women's weight throw but was able to work through her emotions to claim our program's first ACC Indoor event tile.," said Cowper. Â "Obviously, we're excited that her winning throw was also an ACC Championship Meet record."
In the pentathlon, sophomore Holly Hankenson set a school record with 4009 points. Hankenson won the 800m in which she ran a 2:14.01, which was four seconds ahead of second place, and also had personal bests in the 60m hurdles and the high jump. Teammates Mara Zielonka and Linda Mutter finished 10th and 11th, respectively, and both set personal records with their scores.
Sophomore Eric Fox currently stands in sixth place through four events of the men's heptathlon with 2903 points. Teammate Marcus Motill is currently in 16th with 2453 points. Fox recorded a victory in the shot put with a personal best mark of 13.25m/43-5.75 before finishing in a three-way tie for first place in the high jump with a personal best leap of 2.01m/6-7. Motill posted a third place finish in the 60m with a season best time of 7.13. The two will wrap up the heptathlon with the 60m, pole vault, and the 1000m on Friday.
"Eric Fox had an outstanding first day in the men's heptathlon. He had big personal bests in three out of four events today," said Cowper. Â "He's in a great position to improve upon his current school heptathlon record as we head into day two."
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday at the ACC Championships with action beginning at 11 a.m. inside the Reggie Lewis Center. Â Â Â Â
