Sophomore Nicole Woods will compete in Junior Pan American Games
University of Louisville field hockey player Nicole Woods has been selected to the USA Field Hockey's Under 21 roster for the 2016 Junior Women's Pan American Championships which will be held March 29-April 10 in Trinidad & Tobago.
Â
Woods, a sophomore from Beverly, Mass., was initially named to the U21 team in the summer of 2015, she competed with the team in a test series against Great Britain in January 2016. She was previously a member of the USA Field Hockey U19 squad and traveled to Belgium for a series of games.
Â
"Being selected to join the U21 team this past summer was a huge personal accomplishment and to move forward as a player selected to represent the United States the Junior Pan American Games is easily the greatest achievement I've reached in my hockey career," said Woods. "I couldn't be more grateful to not only represent my country internationally, but to represent the University of Louisville as well."
USA Field Hockey will compete in Pool B along with U21 teams from Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and Venezuela. Pool A features Argentina, Barbados, Chile Guayana and Uruguay. The top two finishers in the Pan American Games will earn a berth to the 2016 Junior Women's World Cup which will be held Nov. 23 – Dec. 4 in Chile.
As a sophomore, Woods led the Cardinals with nine goals and 22 points and earned 2015 All-ACC second team NFHCA All-West Region honors. She helped Louisville to a 13-7 overall record and a second-straight NCAA appearance in 2015. The Cards spent seven weeks ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation and finished the season at No. 11.Â
"I am so proud of Nicole's accomplishment on gaining National selection for a major international tournament," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Her natural ability and competitiveness have put her in a position to represent the USA at the highest level. We have been able to provide a high performance environment through her hockey training and sports performance resources to set her up to succeed. This is one of the highest honors that one of our student-athletes has been able to achieve and it is a step in the right direction to have more athletes to be considered for the USA National teams. Congratulations to Nicole!"
Â
"The athletic department and field hockey program have both pushed me to pursue my goals and have prepared me to compete at a higher level on the field," said Woods. "I'm very excited for the upcoming tournament to show the major leaps USA field hockey has made over the past couple of years as it is our only opportunity to qualify for the junior World Cup next December."
