McFerran selected to first team, McCrudden named to second team
The University of Louisville's Ayeisha McFerran and Erin McCrudden have earned 2016 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-America honors as announced on Wednesday. McFerran has been selected to the first team while McCrudden was named to the second team.
Â
"Congratulations to both Ayeisha and Erin for their selection on the prestigious All American teams," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "This a tremendous accomplishment for these individuals, each of whom worked hard to be the best they could be but also had great impact on our team from a leadership perspective. I am so proud of how far this program has developed and for our players to be recognized on the national stage is a terrific reward."
Â
McFerran earns the honor for the second straight season, making her the first multi-time All-American since 2004 when Jessica Javelet garnered the second of her three selections. She also becomes the third player in program history to earn first team honors, joining Javelet (2005) and Alyssa Voelmle (2014).
Â
The sophomore goalkeeper finished the season with an ACC-best 1.27 goals against average and six shutouts. In addition to earning All-America honors, she was also a 2016 Longstreth/NFHCA All-West Region and All-ACC first team selection. McFerran was tabbed ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18. Last season, she became the first UofL freshman to earn NFHCA All-America honors.
Â
McCrudden, a midfielder from Putnam Valley, N.Y., is coming off of a career-best senior campaign which also included All-ACC second team honors and a selection to the NFHCA Senior Game. The two-time Longstreth/NFHCA All-West Region honoree led the conference and was second in the nation with 18 assists. Â The team co-captain was tied for second on the team with 22 points and earned ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 18 after scoring the game-winning goal against then-No. 3 North Carolina.
With the addition of McFerran and McCrudden, the Cardinals now have 14 All-America selections in the history of the program.
Louisville finished the 2016 season with a 15-6 overall record and posted a 3-3 mark in the ACC to finish tied for third in the regular season standings. Â After earning the No. 4 seed in the ACC championship, the Cardinals went on to receive their third straight at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, but fell 1-0 to eventual national champion Delaware.
