November 05, 2016 | Women's Basketball
The Cardinals and Blue Raiders tip in the KFC Yum! Center at 2 p.m.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 5/8-ranked University of Louisville women's basketball team – unofficially – begins its 2016-17 campaign on Sunday, when it plays host to Lindsey Wilson College in an exhibition in the KFC Yum! Center.
Admission is free to the public, and fans are encouraged to arrive early due to construction in downtown Louisville.
The Nov. 6 contest, which begins at 2 p.m., will be broadcast on radio on WKRD 790 AM in Louisville, with Nick Curran (play-by-play) and Adrienne Johnson (analyst) calling the action.
The Cardinals return eight letterwinners from last year's team that went 26-8, including a remarkable 15-1 record in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Louisville, which compiled the second-longest winning streak in school history at 15 games during the year, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Myisha Hines-Allen, the reigning and preseason ACC Player of the Year, is one of five returning starters. The junior, a preseason Associated Press All-America honorable mention, averaged 17.6 points and 8.4 rebounds, while shooting 54.7 percent from the field. She tallied 11 double-doubles during the year.
Hines-Allen isn't the lone returning honoree, though. Louisville regains the services of Mariya Moore, a two-time all-ACC selection, and Asia Durr, an all-ACC freshman team selection. The junior, Moore contributed 14.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.4 assists, while Durr registered 11.0 points and 1.1 steals per game in her freshman season. Combined, the duo knocked down 121 3-pointers at 35.0 percent rate.
This year's group also boasts plenty of depth. Cortnee Walton started all 34 games last year, collecting 7.3 rebounds per game, and Briahanna Jackson was given the starting nod 33 out of 34 times she played – she totaled 11.1 points and 2.0 steals per game. Taylor Johnson, a decorated graduate guard transfer from Loyola Chicago, is expected to play heavily after finishing her career logging 14.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.5 steals in 93 contests.
Lindsey Wilson, currently ranked a program-best fifth in the NAIA coaches' top-25 poll, has won its first two contests of the season: 81-55 at Brescia (Ky.) on Oct. 29; 69-47 versus Midway (Ky.) on Nov. 2.
Chanel Roberts, the team's top scorer a season ago, ranks among the program's top 10 all-time in points (1,278, 6th) and rebounds (595, 8th).
The Blue Raiders, under the direction of 28th-year coach John Wethington, were picked to finish first in Mid-South Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.
