Louisville is off to its best start in ACC play since 2017-18
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 9-ranked University of Louisville women's basketball team (24-4, 14-1 ACC) used a fast start to establish early momentum and never looked back, defeating Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Florida State (9-17, 4-10 ACC) Sunday evening inside the KFC Yum! Center by a final score of 88-65.
UofL's victory was driven by a dominant performance on both sides of the ball. The Cardinals shot a strong 35-of-71 (49.3%) for the game. Louisville's defense forced the Seminoles into 16 turnovers. The Cards also shined on the glass, hauling in 46 total rebounds, including 19 offensive boards. UofL turned those 19 offensive boards into 20 second-chance points. The Cardinals tallied 25 assists for the second-straight game.
Louisville had five double-figure scorers tonight. Laura Ziegler led the way for the Cardinals, scoring a team-high 14 points, dishing out a team-high seven assists and hauling in a team-high eight rebounds. Reyna Scott, Imari Berry and Skylar Jones each recorded 11-points for a three-way tie for second on the team in points. Grace Mbugua tied a career-high with 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers for UofL.
Early play by the Cards was highlighted by playmaking and physicality, racking up eight assists and 15 rebounds (six offensive) in the first quarter. Ziegler led the way for Louisville in the period, finishing with seven points, five rebounds and four assists during her 10 minutes of play. The Cardinals held a 19-10 advantage after one quarter of play.
Louisville carried over the intensity and effort from the opening stanza, as they forced the Seminoles to go 4-of-16 (25.0%) from the field in the second period. Berry registered six points in the quarter to lead the Cardinals, as UofL took a 34-20 lead into intermission. The Cards blocked seven shots and scored 10 points off of Florida State turnovers in the first half.
Out of the break offensive play picked up for both teams with Louisville claiming a 27-19 scoring advantage in the third quarter. The Cardinals shot a superb 12-of-19 (63.2%) from the field in the period, with contributions from seven different bucket-getters. UofL led 61-39, after three quarters of play.
The Cards started off shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor in the final period of play, the hot stretch forced an FSU timeout. Louisville outscored the Seminoles 27-26 in the quarter. Jones and Mbugua paced UofL in points during the last stanza, each putting up six-points apiece. The Cardinals would claim victory, with a final score of 88-65.
