Volleyball Falls to Syracuse

Morgan Miller had a career-high 23 kills and 11 digs but it was not enough as the University of Louisville Cardinals fell to Syracuse 3-2 in Syracuse Sunday afternoon.

UofL, 6-10, 1-4, hit .152 and had three blocks and four aces. Jasmine Bennett added 14 kills with freshman Melanie McHenry adding 13 along with two aces. Syracuse was led by Mackenzie Weaver's 18 kills. She was assisted by Leah Levert's 12 kills and six blocks.  SU had 14 blocks and hit .226 with 4 aces.

In the first set, UofL surged out to a 12-6 lead before the Orange called timeout. Syracuse went on a 7-1 run out of that timeout to tie at 13. The 'Cuse stayed close before the Cards closed out the set with a 25-22 win. UofL hit .293 and was led by Tess Clark's five kills.

In the second set, Syracuse ran out to an 11-5 lead. The Cards pushed back but trailed at 13-10. A UofL 4-0 run to come within one at 19-18. Syracuse had five blocks in the sets and just outhit the Cards .179 to .106. Morgan Miller led the Cards with seven kills in the set.

In the third set, Syracuse took the lead at 10-9 on a kill by Jalissa Trotter and then never trailed again. The Cards got to within one at 19-18 on two SU errors and the Orange called timeout. The pause helped the Orange as they went on a 5-1 run down the stretch for the 25-20 win.

In the fourth set, the Cards used a 4-0 run midway through to take a 16-11 lead. The Cuse answered with a 6-1 run to tie at 22. The teams traded points but the Cards won on a kill by Jasmine Bennett followed by a Tess Clark kill to win 25-23 and force a fifth set.

In the fifth set, Syracuse popped out to a 10-7 lead as the Cardinals struggled with the aggressive Orange serve that included two aces. Morgan Miller scored twice to come within two at 11-9 but the Cards were outscored 4-1 down the stretch, falling 15-10.

The Cardinals play NC State on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. and UNC on Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. both in the KFC Yum! Center.Â
