Senior Shannon Sloss scored for Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 8 University of Louisville field hockey team fell 3-1 to No. 14 Boston College in an ACC contest Friday evening at Trager Stadium.
Â
"Credit to Boston College for playing a great game," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "They won the majority of the 50/50 balls. And when they attacked the ball, they attacked in numbers and were able to generate some nice plays. They broke our press without a doubt, we'll have to go back and look at some film. Hats' off to them, they outplayed us by a long way today. I'm disappointed in our effort... We've got to get back to the drawing board and work together and play to our identity."
Â
The Eagles (5-6, 2-3 ACC) broke through in the eighth minute of the game after being awarded a penalty corner. Emily McCoy's initial shot was turned back by Louisville goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran, but, Frederique Haverhals was there for the rebound to put Boston College on the scoreboard.
Â
BC added another goal with under five minutes remaining in the first half. Alesandra Miller moved the ball past the 25 yard line and rifled a pass into a crowded circle where Eryn McCoy deflected it into the cage.
Â
Louisville (10-3, 1-3 ACC) answered three minutes later when freshman Minout Mink intercepted a ball near the 50 yard line and broke away from the Eagles' defense toward Louisville's circle where she found Shannon Sloss all by herself. The senior received Mink's pass and immediately sent a shot past BC's Audra Hampsch to pull the Cards within a goal.
Â
UofL entered the break trailing 2-1 after holding a 6-5 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corners.
Â
Boston College added an insurance goal with seven minutes remaining in the game. Eryn McCoy dribbled to the end line and sent a reverse stick cross to Lucy Lytle. McFerran attempted to cut off the pass, but Lytle quickly lifted the ball over her into the cage to make the score 3-1.
Â
The teams finished with 10 shots apiece while Louisville held a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners. McFerran (9-3) collected four saves in the game. Hampsch (5-6) had two stops in the contest.
Louisville will return to action on Sunday when the Cardinals play host to No. 6 Northwestern at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
