Volleyball To Host Syracuse and Boston in ACC Homestand

    The University of Louisville volleyball team wraps up its three-game home stand this weekend with matches against Syracuse and Boston College at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals host Syracuse on Friday night at 7 p.m. in an ESPN3 televised matchup before facing Boston College on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.Â
  Louisville enters the week with an 8-4 overall record and 2-0 in ACC play after sweeping Notre Dame 3-0 and defeating Miami 3-1 last weekend. Against Notre Dame, the Cards were led by senior outside hitter Erin Fairs, who recorded 17 kills, an ace, and two blocks to lead the Cardinals to a 25-23, 25-19, 25-16 victory over the Fighting Irish in their ACC season opener. The Cards hit a season-high .388 and registered 5.5 blocks led by junior outside hitter Janelle Jenkins' three. Freshman Aniah Philo had 10 kills, hitting .350 on the left with an ace and seven digs. In Sunday's matinee with Miami, Fairs posted a season-high 24 kills and added five blocks to lift the Cardinals to a 22-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-21 victory over the visiting Hurricanes. UofL hit .264 but had 14 blocks and seven aces. Philo joined Fairs in double digits, posting a career-high 14 kills on a .345 attack percentage and adding 13 digs for her first double-double on the season. Sophomore middle blocker Tess Clark added a match-high eight blocks with her seven kills and senior setter Katie George dished out 51 assists. Freshman libero Molly Sauer had 17 digs.Â

   On the season, senior outside hitter Erin Fairs leads the Cardinal attack with 193 kills averaging 4.11 kills per set, which is third in the conference. Junior outside hitter Janelle Jenkins joins Fairs in triple digits as she adds 139 kills while junior outside hitter Maya McClendon adds 97 kills for the Cardinal attack. Sophomore middle blocker Tess Clark adds 95 kills and boasts a team-high 50 blocks. Senior setter Katie George has 545 assists on the season and is ranked fifth in the nation while leading the ACC with an average of 11.60 assists per set. Freshman libero Molly Sauer has 196 digs (4.17 digs per set) and leads the team with 16 aces.
   Syracuse presents a familiar foe for the Cardinals as the two schools have met previously as conference members of the BIG EAST. Syracuse enters the match on a six-game winning streak and boasts an 11-2 record after defeating Boston College and Clemson in conference play last weekend. On the season, senior outside hitter Silvi Uattara leads the team with 153 kills and averages 3.12 kills per set. Senior outside hitter Monika Salkute adds 139 kills while redshirt senior outside hitter Nicolette Serratore adds 128 kills with the two of them both averaging 2.84 kills per set. Senior Gosia Wlaszczuk leads the Orange with 377 assists and averages 7.69 assists per set. Defensively, sophomore middle blocker Leah Levert leads the team with 63 blocks and is third in the ACC with 1.35 blocks per set. The Cardinals lead the series 19-0 after winning both matches against the Orange last season. Syracuse head coach Leonid Yelin returns to his old stomping grounds as he coached Louisville for 15 seasons.

The Eagles boast an 8-6 record and is 0-2 in ACC play after falling to Syracuse and Georgia Tech last weekend. The Eagles lead the conference with 724 kills with senior outside hitter Katty Workman leading the ACC with 208 kills and set the team career kills record in her last match against Georgia Tech. Workman averages 4.24 kills per set, which is second in the conference. Sophomore outside hitter Sol Calvete has knocked down 140 kills and junior right side Julia Topor adds 124 kills for the Eagles. Senior middle hitter Kam McLain contributes 111 kills and a team-high 57 blocks. Senior setter Mallori Moffat sets up the offense and leads the team with 518 assists and averages 9.25 assists per set. Junior libero Madisen Lydon leads the team with 214 kills and averages 3.82 digs per set. The two teams meet for just the second time in history. The Eagles took a 3-2 victory last year at the KFC Yum! Center with Workman boasting a match-high 21 kills for the Eagles while Jenkins led the Cardinals with 18 kills.
