Cards return to practice field in preparation for Saturday's game versus undefeated NC State at Carter Finley Stadium.
The University of Louisville football team, coming off a 45-3 win over Samford on Saturday, returned to the practice field on Tuesday in preparation for Saturday's game versus undefeated NC State. Making their first trip to Raleigh since 2007, the Cardinals are playing their first true road game of the season when they take on the Wolfpack.
The Cardinals, working out in full pads, practiced for over two hours in the Trager Indoor Practice Facility due to steady rain in the Louisville area. Head coach Bobby Petrino, who is 1-0 all-time versus NC State, conducted a highly competive and intense practice on Tuesday afternoon in preparation for a wolpack team that is one of the hottest teams in the country.
"They have been taking care of the football, they have been running it physically and playing good defense," head coach Bobby Petrino said."I think it is going to be one of those games that comes down to being able to execute and make plays in the fourth quarter."
Quick Scores in Return to Lineup
Junior wide receiver James Quick returned to action on Saturday versus Samford after missing two-straight games. Entering the game in the first quarter, Quick caught three passes for 69 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown pass.
"It felt great to be able to get back out there with my teammates last Saturday," Quick said. "I'm feeling good. It was a great feeling to be back out there. I'm just ready to go out there and give it my all."
A native of Louisville, Ky., Quick has caught seven passes for 97 yards this season after coming off a year where he caught a career-best 36 receptions for 566 yards and three scores.
Bonnafon and Jackson See the Field Together
Sophomore Reggie Bonnafon and freshman Lamar Jackson have appeared on the field together over the last two games. Petrino, who has a knack of getting his playmakers n the field, came up with packages to get his two speedsters on the field at the same time. Bonnafon ran for 26 yards and threw for 62 yards against Samford, while Jackson set a UofL frehman record with 396 yards of total offense.
"I like the speed that is out there and the ability of two good playmakers," Petrino said. "It is something that I think can help us as we go on, that is why you saw Corvin Lamb get some carries the other night. The ability to get more speed on the field, make bigger plays and one of the things that is one of our goals as we go forward in this conference is to be the fastest team in the conference. We are going to recruit to speed and we are going to try to get the guys on the field that will make plays because they are faster than the other guys."
Quick Joins Young Receiving Unit
When James Quick and Jamari Staples went down with injuies, the Cardinals were forced to have their freshmen receivers grow up fast, nd the rookies have responded in a big way. Traveon Samuel, Micky Crum and Jaylen Smith are tied for the team lead in receptions this season with 13, which has been thrilling for Quick to see while sitting on the sideline.
"They are improving everyday," Quick said. "They came out and work hard in practice. They give the coaches everyhing they have in practice and it shows in their improvement. It's exciting to watch these guys out on the field."
Offensive coordinator Garrick McGee
on the return of James Quick
"Speed and leadership. He is the experienced guy in our receiving corps. It's really good to have him on the practice field. He provides a lot of speed for us and allows us to make huge plays."
on the offensive line
"I thought they did a really god job. I thought they played with a lot of passion and enthusiasm. I thought Lukayus McNeil really stood out to me with his effort. T.C. Klusman did a really good. He took care of the ball which is the first job of the center. He will be tested this week with NC State's front."
