Track and Field Travels to Tennessee Challenge

This Week: The Louisville men's and women's track and field teams continue outdoor competition as they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Tennessee Challenge on Saturday.
The event is scheduled to begin Saturday morning with field events beginning at 9:00 a.m. with the men's hammer throw followed by the women's hammer throw. Running events are slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. with the women's 4x100m relay.
Up Next: Louisville continues competition as they host the Cardinal Twilight at Cardinal Park on May 8. The meet will be the final competition as they tune up for the ACC Outdoor Championships in Tallahassee, Fla., May 14-16.
SEASON NOTES:
Krause Gets Her Second Win: At the Georgia Tech Invitational, sophomore Chanel Krause picked up her second outdoor victory of the season with a season best mark of 4.12m/13-6.25 in the pole vault. She also won the pole vault at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational.
Westrich Gets First Season Win: Despite facing adverse weather conditions at the Georgia Tech Invitational, junior Nils Westrich won the hammer throw event with a throw of 58.62m/192-04 for his first outdoor victory of the season.
Arsenault Continues Winning Ways: At the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Calvin Arsenault turned in impressive performances while sweeping both hurdle events. In the 110m hurdles, Arsenault broke his previous school record of 13.83 that was set two weekends ago at Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational. His first place time of 13.82 was also a meet record. Later that afternoon, Arsenault set a new meet record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.68.
Henderson Comes Out Strong: Two-sport athlete Emmonnie Henderson competed in her second competition of the outdoor season and had a breakthrough performance at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Henderson, who just finished up the basketball season, won the shot put with a mark of 15.70m/51-6.25. She also competed in the discus throw and finished second with a personal best mark of 52.23m/171-4.
Williams Makes Strong Debut: Coming off a fourth place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships, junior Ben Williams made his season debut of the 2015 outdoor season. The All-American set a new meet record and recorded the best jump of the season in the ACC at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. His jump of 16.06m/52-8.25 earned him his first victory of the season.
Cards Win Seven at ACC/Big Ten Challenge: In the Cardinals' second home meet of the season, the Cardinals faced elite competition with Indiana, Michigan State, and Notre Dame at Cardinal Park. The Cardinals rose to the occasion and accomplished seven wins in the meet. Arsenault led the team with two victories while Henderson and Williams also took wins in their respective events. Junior Japhet Kipkoech recorded his first win of the season in the 5000m run with a time of 14:39.20. Freshman Josh Hall won his first event of the outdoor season with a personal best 47.08 finish in the 400m dash. Redshirt senior Maggie Gilbertson won her second event of the season in the high jump with a mark of 1.67m/5-5.75.
Freshmen Impress at Tennessee Relays: While the Cardinals competed at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, two freshmen competed at the Tennessee Relays in the heptathlon and decathlon events. Eric Fox finished second with 6,627 points in the decathlon while Linda Mutter finished second with a total of 4,957 points in the heptathlon. Each athlete posted an individual win with Fox winning the shot put with a mark of 12.67m/41-7 and Mutter winning the long jump with a mark of 5.69m/18-8.
Wash Goes Long: Sophomore Bre'Yana Wash continued her winning ways with her second consecutive long jump victory. She finished first at the Florida Relays with a personal best mark of 6.16m/20-2.50 after winning at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational the week before.
Cheruiyot Resets School Record: At the Florida Relays, junior Benadate Cheruiyot set the school record in the 3000m steeplechases with a time of 10:19.38. She broke the previous school record of 10:19.64 that she set at the AAC Championships in 2014.
Relay Team Breaks School Record: The team of Jeron Brown, Andrew Nsuk, Teague Peck, and Josh Hall continued their momentum, once again breaking the school record. The four finished with a time of 3:11.07, breaking their previous school record of 3:12.93 that was set at the Alabama Relays last month.
Relay Squads Set Tone at Alabama Relays: In their first outdoor competition of the season at the Alabama Relays, the Cardinals set five new school relay records. Both distance squads, both 4x200 relay teams, as well as the men's 4x400 relay squad set school records in their events.
Distance Teams Break School Records: The Cardinals broke three school records on the final day of the Alabama Relays with the distance medley teams breaking two of them. The men's distance team of Andrew Stewart, Carlos Coleman, Teague Peck, and Edwin Kibichiy took first place with a time of 9:50.96 breaking the 39 year record of 10:09.00 that was set in 1976 at the Florida Relays. The women's distance team of Michelle Molodynia,Zahara Gully, Mia Ross, and Benadate Cheruiyot finished third in the event with a time of 11:38.72, eclipsing the previous school record of 11:51.96 that was set in 1995 at the Alabama Relays.
