April 05, 2015 | Men's Tennis
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 23 University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated the University of Miami 7-0 in an ACC matchup April 5 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 20-5 on the season and 6-3 in ACC play. Miami falls to 7-12 (1-7 ACC).
"After Friday's tough loss versus Virginia Tech, our locker room felt like a funeral parlor," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We had a positive workout Saturday morning and these players bounced back in a major way today. Miami is one of the historic programs in our sport. They have a talented, but young squad. They have a great coaching staff that will have them playing at a high level soon."
The Cardinals took the first point of the match by winning on doubles courts 2 and 3. Albert Wagner and Van Damrongsri teamed to beat Nile Clark and Alexander Fahnehjelm 8-1 at No. 2 and Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Chris Simich 8-2 at the three-spot.
In singles action, Simich gave the Cards a 2-0 lead when he cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Nile Clark at the four-spot. Fifth-ranked Sebastian Stiefelmeyer's 6-1, 6-2 win over Christian Langmo at No. 1 made the score 3-0. Albert Wagner clinched win on court two where he beat Wilfredo Gonzalez 6-1, 6-2. Luis Elizondo's 6-3, 6-3 win over Niclas Genovese increased Louisville's lead to 5-0. Van Damrongsri registered a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Bernard Tefel at the five-spot and Gornet wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Henrique Tsukamoto at No. 3.
"Sebastian and Albert played lights out today, a new doubles lineup worked well and Chris Simich was very solid. Van had two nice ACC wins this weekend and his confidence has picked up," said Ecarma. "We have three more ACC matches to go. Our goal is to get one of the top 3 seeds in the conference tournament so we can get a first-round bye."
The Cards return to action on April 7 when they play host to Northern Kentucky at 12 p.m. and Eastern Kentucky at 4:30 p.m. in a doubleheader at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
