LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Katie Mitchell shot a 1-under-par 71 in the final round of the ACC Championship, earning a top-20 finish, and led the University of Louisville women's golf team to a seventh-place showing at the ACC Championship in Greensboro, N.C.
The Cardinals, who played 27 holes on Saturday, logged a 20-over-par 884 in their inaugural ACC Championship at the Sedge Field Country Club. Louisville, ranked No. 40 by Golfstat, finished nine strokes ahead of 26th-ranked Miami (Fla.), with Virginia capturing the team title behind a 27-under-par 837.
"We had a great experience in our first ACC Tournament, which was a terrific event against some of the best teams in the country," head coach Courtney Trimble said. "Unfortunately, we just didn't execute to our abilities throughout the week. Much has been learned, and we are looking forward to preparing for regionals."
As a team, Louisville earned the most pars over 54 holes (181).
Mitchell regrouped after her first round 3-over-par 75, completing a par-72 in the second round and then finishing out the day for a composite a 2-over-par 218 to tie for 17th. In the final 18 holes, Mitchell had four birdies and 12 pars. The redshirt junior totaled 40 pars over the three days, third most of any individual in the 55-player field.
Emily Haas was Louisville's second-best performer, tying for 21st behind a 3-over-par 219. The senior, who tied a season-best in the opening round on Friday with a 2-under-par 70, hit a 4-over-par 76 in the second round, and then finished the day with a 1-over-par 73.
Katie Petrino (9-over-par 225) tied for 36th, and Louise Oxner (10-over-par 226) finished 39th to round out the Cardinals' four scorers. Oxner had 39 pars, tied for fourth most of any individual.
Louisville now awaits the announcement of the NCAA Championships field on April 27 to see where it will play in one of four NCAA Regional Championships. The NCAA regionals will take place at four sites from May 7-9 (Raleigh, N.C.; South Bend, Ind.; San Antonio, Texas; and St. George, Utah).
