The Louisville track and field team finished day one at the Virginia Tech Elite and the Meyo Invitational on Friday evening. Ben Williams, the current ACC Performer of the Week, set new school record in the triple jump to win the event while senior Megan Klein set a new personal best in the 5,000 meter run.
Williams once again shined in the triple jump in just his second week of action. He led through four rounds before Virginia Tech's Manuel Ziegler passed him in the fifth round with a jump of 16.25m/53- 3.75. Williams set a new school record and recorded the best jump of the indoor season, finishing with a jump of 16.55m/54-03.75 in the sixth round. He broke former NCAA Champion Andre Black's record of 16.29m/53-5.50 set in 2007. The jump also gives him the top mark in the nation, passing USF's Matthew O'Neal's mark of 16.43/53-11 at the UAB Vulcan Invite earlier this season. Williams also set a new meet record.
"Ben did a great job of competing tonight," said head coach Dale Cowper. "He led the competition through four rounds and then the young man from Virginia Tech took the lead in round five. Ben's round six response was a national leading effort, breaking former NCAA Champion Andre Black's school record by nearly a foot. " Freshman Kaleb Rowe set a new personal best in the triple jump as well to finish eighth with a mark of 14.35m/47-01.00. On the women's side, Brittany Owens finished seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 12.04m/39-06.00.
In the weight throw Dolly Nyemah finished second with a throw of 20.80m/68-03.00. Teammate Rachel Serafin finished 11th with a season best throw of 17.51m/57-05.50. Caitlin Gilmore finished 20th with a throw of 15.63m/51-03.50.
Kayla Tyson set a new season best with a time of 7.71 in the 60 meter preliminaries. Taylor Bradley set a new personal best with a time of 25.23 in the 200 meters open to finish 21st. Tyson finished 31st with a time of 25.62. Kelsey DeLapp finished with a time of 26.69 and Jade Hawkins finished with a time of 27.17.

In the women's unseeded pole vault, Hawkins finished tied for fifth, clearing 3.63m/11-10.75. DeLapp finished tied for ninth, clearing 3.63m/11-10.75.
All three freshmen shined in the men's unseeded pole vault, setting personal best. Jacob Marguet and Cain Cooper cleared 4.71m/15-05.50 to finish tied for fourth. Both marks were personal bests. Fellow freshman Eric Fox continued the trend of setting personal bests, clearing 4.71m/15-05.50 to finish seventh.
Brad Vivace also set a personal best with a throw of 18.77m/61-07.00 to finish 11th. Calvin Arsenault finished fourth in the 60 meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 8.08. He qualified for the finals but did not finish. Fox set another personal best with an 8.94 in the preliminaries.
Freshman Josh Hall finished with an eighth place finish in the Men's 200 meter open with a time of 22.15. Antoine Keys finished 20th with a time of 22.66 and Carlos Coleman finished 28th with a time of 23.19. Teague Peck finished 10th in the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.38. Andrew Nsuk finished 29th with a time of 2:01.72.
The women's distance team saw action at the Meyo Invitational on the Notre Dame campus. In her season debut at the 5,000 meter run, senior Megan Klein set a new personal best with a time of 17:21.70. Klein led the women with a 27th place finish. Rachel Pease finished with a time of 17:56.56 while Leah Kiyohara finished with a time of 18:18.05.
"I am so happy for Megan Klein," said Cowper. "She was able to get over a 20 second personal est in the 5,000 meters up at Notre Dame. Megan has worked as hard as any student in our program over the last two years and this was an exciting night for her."
Both teams will be back in action in the final day of the Virginia Elite and the Meyo Invitational.
