LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Former University of Louisville men's golf All-American Adam Rainaud collected birdies on four of seven holes last Friday en route to a victory at the 52nd PGA Match Play Championship. The event was held on the Dye Course at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Rainaud defeated Brian Cairns 4 and 2 in the semifinals before overcoming Rich Berberian, Jr. 5 and 4 in the Championship match.
"This winter was the first time I've played the Dye Course, and I really like it," said Rainaud. "The reason I was successful today was because I played so well on the par-3s, and the Dye has a lot of tough par-3s. I'm going to enjoy this as I head back home and wait out the snow."
In the Championship match, Rainaud got off to a quick start, winning two of the first three holes. Berberian began to mount a comeback, but Rainaud was able to pull away, winning the 13th hole and forcing Berberian to concede at the 14th hole. With the win, Rainard becomes one of the youngest golfers to take the title in event history.
A native of South Hadley, Mass., Rainaud earned his PGA membership this past April. He graduated from UofL in 2008 with a degree in Sport Administration.
