Ben Williams Named ACC Performer of the Week
February 10, 2015 | Track & Field
The University of Louisville track and field's Ben Williams is the ACC Men's Field Performer of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. This is the second straight honor for Williams, after winning the triple jump at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Elite and setting a new school record.
In just his second week of competition, Williams led the competition through four rounds before Virginia Tech's Manuel Ziegler passed him in the fifth round with a jump of 16.25m/53- 3.75. In the sixth round, Williams jumped 16.55m/54-03.75 to set a new school record and recorded the best jump of the indoor season. He broke former NCAA Champion Andre Black's record of 16.29m/53-5.50 set in 2007. The jump also gave him the top mark in the nation, passing USF's Matthew O'Neal's mark of 16.43/53-11 at the UAB Vulcan Invite earlier this season. He also set a new meet record. The Newcastle, United Kingdom native's effort was just shy of the ACC record of 16.57m (54-4.5) held by NC State's Mike Patton since 1998.
The win was his sixth career win in the triple jump. Last season Williams earned All-American honors after finishing fourth at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a previous personal best of 16.22m/53-2.75.
